4 Tips to Protect Your Child’s Health at Childcare

According to expert pediatricians, a large group of kids being in the same space increases the chances of germs and diseases spreading. It’s a fact that children who attend large childcare facilities (with 100 kids or more) get more infections and respiratory illnesses than children who stay at home.

However, according to a new study, the same kids are less likely to develop such illnesses during their grade-school years. This is because they get exposed to bacteria at an early stage when their immune system is developing, allowing the body to develop long-term antibodies.

According to a leading psychologist, all children get sick in the same amount—the only difference is timing.

For parents who are still concerned about their child’s health, here are a few tips to prevent your kids from catching a bug in daycare:

Insist On Clean Hands:

One of the best ways to reduce the risk of an illness is to insist on hand hygiene. Talk to your kids about the importance of washing their hands regularly and the dangers of germs getting inside the body through dirty hands.

Teach them how to properly wash their hands. Instill the habit of cleaning hands after going to the bathroom, after playing outside, and before and after having a meal.

Boost Your Child’s Immunity:

A strong immune system can fight off most viruses and bacterial infections. Healthy diets containing vegetables, fruits, and iron-rich foods can help boost the immune system.

Getting plenty of rest and a good night’s sleep is also a key to a healthy immune system. You can also consult a pediatrician and get your child iron supplements to help strengthen their immune system.

Have Your Child Vaccinated:

Vaccines help the body by encouraging it to develop antibodies to fight off various illnesses. Most daycare centers require up-to-date vaccination records before they allow a child to attend. Some parents fail to keep up with subsequent vaccines, though. This leaves their children susceptible to contracting dangerous viruses both inside and outside daycare.

Find out the daycare’s vaccination policies and make sure the staff has been vaccinated. When flu season rolls around, make sure your child gets flu shots to protect them from this contagious illness.

Choose A Reputable Daycare:

While daycare facilities might seem similar, certain internal policies and procedures can make all the difference when trying to keep your child healthy. The first thing you need to do is to read reviews from parents to find out if they’ve had any trouble with contagious illnesses. Next, survey the premises and the facilities to ensure they are clean and well-cared for.

Finally, make sure they are properly licensed and abide by state-regulated health codes. Also, take a look at their sick child policy and make sure it requires parents to pick up their child from daycare if they are sick and not to send them till they are completely cured.
