For the Love of Reading – How to Encourage Your Child In To Read More

According to a study conducted by the Ohio State University, children whose parents read at least one book to them a day hear over 200,000 more words by the age of 5. Similarly, studies show that reading for pleasure not only improves literacy in children, but also enhances their mathematical abilities and cognitive functioning.

Parents and children who read together also experience a stronger bond and better family dynamics. So if we want our children to develop essential life skills and thrive, instilling a love for reading is vital.

Encouraging children to read can be challenging, though, but with the help of these expert tips, your child will become an avid reader in no time:

Develop Their Oral Language:

It’s important to develop a child’s oral language skills early on. You can do that by reading them a story and then asking them about specific parts of the book. Talk to them about their favorite part of the story and develop their interest by asking if they learned a new word.

Incorporate A Variety Of Genres:

The more you expose your child to various types of writing, the more it will build their interest in the medium. It will also prevent them from getting bored. Try to read them poetry, scientific facts, and news, true stories, as well as regular kiddy books.

This will open them up to a whole new world of concepts, information, as well as phonemic awareness.

Surround Them With Literary Materials:

Children who are exposed to large collections of reading resources in their homes are naturally inclined to develop a reading habit. Inspire them to read by providing a range of interesting books, magazines, and journals at their reading level. Add to the incentive by getting them cute bookmarks and activity sheets pertaining to various books.

Technology Can Be Useful:

Technology has revolutionized the way kids are growing up. With the easy availability of smartphones and tablets, 47% of parents say they believe their kids are addicted to these devices. Use that to your advantage by getting them an e-reader. Not only will that curb their addiction to electronic devices, but it will also increase their reading skills.

They can be adapted to each child’s specific needs and have a variety of options, such as font sizes, page colors and more to make the reading process easier. They also contain multiple reading resources which will capture your child’s interest.  They can switch between books if they find a story isn’t interesting enough.

Let THEM Decide What To Read:

Reading for pleasure is only possible when the child has a say in what they wish to read. Forcing them to read what you find interesting will put them off reading itself. Kids who get to choose what they read engage with the material better and are more likely to retain the information. Having a choice in the matter also helps develop their decision-making skills and goes a long way in shaping life-long readers!
