One of the most stressful and contentious issues for parents in America is what to do about childcare. A lot of research has been done on this topic, with different findings that have left a lot of parents confused. Let’s put some initial concerns to bed first.
According to a US National Institutes of Health study, children who were enrolled in high-quality childcare received better scores for cognitive and academic achievements as teenagers. They also displayed a lower tendency to act out compared to peers who received no or low-quality childcare.
Now that it’s established that childcare is beneficial for your child, there’s the issue of how to find out if your child’s ready for childcare. Here are some factors that you need to consider to determine whether your child’s ready:
Potty Training:
Childcare and pre-schools have different rules and regulations when it comes to toilet training. Before you enroll your child in any childcare center, make sure you check out their potty training policies and compare it with your Childs potty training progress.
The right age for potty training varies according to the nature and ability of each child. A good way to assess whether your child is ready for potty training is to observe if they can keep a diaper dry for at least an hour.
Level of Independence:
Before sending your kid to a childcare center you need to help them prepare for it. The important thing is to establish a level of independence and not rush in to rescue them for every little thing. Encourage your child to try to the following tasks themselves:
- Washing hands
- Wiping their nose
- Opening their lunchbox
- Manage simple fasteners on clothes such as buttons and zippers
- Zipping up their backpacks
- Covering their mouth when they sneeze or cough
- Other basic etiquettes
Ability to Express Needs
Before starting daycare, you need to assess the ability of your child to express their needs in a way that an adult can comprehend. This means they should have a good level of cognitive and language development. They should be able to express themselves using a combination of words and hand gestures. They should also be able to understand simple instructions and follow them.
Your child should also have a basic understanding of the fact that other children have feelings too. It’s important to develop feelings of sympathy and empathy at an early age so that your child can adjust and play well with the other kids in childcare.
Ability to Spend Time Away From Parents
A child who has never been away from their parents will have a hard time settling in at daycare. Before you decide to send you kid to a childcare center, you need to make sure they’re ready to make the transition.
Make them spend short amounts of time away from you, either with a relative or a babysitter to get used to the idea of being away from mom and dad. Arrange for play dates with close friends or neighbors to teach them how to play well with other kids, learn to share, and gain confidence while being away from the comfort of their home.
