Food & Beverage Holidays You Can Celebrate with Your Kids in Summer

Summer is the perfect opportunity for children to take advantage of camps like summer and sports camps, or other extracurricular activities offered around Frisco. But, what about the days when activities aren’t planned in advance? If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids educated, entertained, and hands-on with fun activities at the house where the whole family can join in, here are some amazing activities we’ve put together that celebrate fun food & beverage holidays during the summer!

National Food & Beverage Holidays in June

June is known for some amazingly fun and whimsical holidays that celebrate foods & beverages! One of the greatest ways to teach children about a multitude of subjects like culture, health, and history is through one of their favorite mediums – food! In June, several nationally-recognized monthly holidays like National Candy Month, National Country Cooking Month, National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, and National Soul Food Month are celebrated around our nation! Kids always need a reason to celebrate!

National Candy Month

This silly holiday was started by the National Confectioner’s Association to celebrate how much fun and joy has been added in the name of candy! If your kids are candy lovers (like most are), celebrate National Candy Month with a bit of exercise and blind determination – with friends, family, and a pinata!

Pinatas are amazing ways to get friends and family together to have candy-focused fun! Of course, you can buy your own pinata, but making it is so much more fun! Here are special instructions on how to make your own summer-fun pinata!

National Country Cooking Month

What better way for a Texan to celebrate National Country Cooking Month than with good ‘ol Southern-cooked food? Nothing says comfort food better than food that is cooked with friends and family! So how can you and your little ones celebrate National Country Cooking Month? Put together a homemade cookbook with your family’s most cherished country-cooked recipes! Here’s how.

The easiest way to prepare your own cookbook with your kids is by gathering:

  • A collection of your family’s favorite recipes
  • A photo album from a dollar store or any store of your preference with plastic sleeves
  • Notecards
  • Pictures of your recipes

As you and your kids make your family-favorite Southern country-cooked recipes, write them down, snag a photo, print it out and place the recipe cards and photos right there in the album! Not only will this store your favorite recipes for generations, but it can double as a sweet family photo album.

National Fresh Fruit & Vegetables Month

Aside from being colorful and delicious, fruits and vegetables are one of the most vital nutrient-rich foods we can eat! Fruits and vegetables are an incredible source of fiber, natural sugars, and vitamins that give us the get-and-and-go we need every single day. So, to celebrate National Fruits and Vegetables Month with your kids, make a smoothie!

  • Milk (1 cup)
  • Spinach (1 1/2 cups) – frozen works too.
  • Banana (1 medium) – peeled; frozen or fresh
  • Vanilla Yogurt (1/2 cup)
  • Blueberries (1/2 cup) – frozen or fresh
  • Dark Chocolate Cocoa Powder (1 1/2 tablespoons)
  • Vanilla (1 teaspoon)
  • Ice to taste

National Soul Food Month

Soul food has deep roots and origins based in the most historical times of African-American culture. Soul food is an extremely important historical feature for children to learn about how resourceful food and recipes can be!

While not every family has the soul food culinary gift, every family can participate in its celebration by visiting local soul food restaurants! Not only are you celebrating local businesses, but you’ll be celebrating the culinary artists with the true gift of soul food cuisine.
