Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA)

Understanding Education Freedom in Texas

The Goal

Texas Education Freedom Accounts help eligible families pay for approved educational expenses through participating schools and service providers. The program is administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, with Odyssey supporting applications and account management.

Funds may be used only for expenses permitted under TEFA rules.

Who Qualifies

TEFA eligibility depends on the child’s circumstances and the program’s requirements. Pre K applicants must meet additional eligibility conditions. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee a funding award.

School Eligibility
Children must meet the eligibility requirements for a Texas public school, charter school or qualifying Pre K program.
Residency and Citizenship
Families must meet Texas residency requirements. The child must be a U.S. citizen or national, or lawfully admitted to the United States.
Funding Priorities
Awards follow the program’s priority rules, including household income and qualifying disabilities. Check the official guidance for the applicable school year.
Pre-K Requirements
Preschool enrollment alone does not establish eligibility. Pre K applicants must meet the qualifying criteria under Texas law.

Important:
Participants who remain in good standing do not need to submit a new application each year. Follow the program’s instructions to confirm continued participation.
