If you were to mention Valentine’s Day to your preschooler, balloons, candy, stuffed animals, and hearts would probably come to their mind. The origin of Valentine’s Day and the story of St. Valentine reveal that the holiday is so much more. It is truly about showing love to others through acts of kindness.
Parents, this Valentine’s Day, consider sharing the story of St. Valentine with your child. St. Valentine was sent to prison a long time ago for helping people get married. He didn’t let jail stop his kindness, though, and he ended up healing the daughter of the jailer. This story shows us that Valentine’s Day can be a time for us to remind our children to be kind to friends and family, but also to strangers. Here are three ideas to help your child practice showing kindness toward others this February 14th:
- Find and decorate a jar in your house to be filled with kind notes. Family members can write a note to each other and put it in the jar leading up to Valentine’s Day. On the 14th, let each person read the sweet notes written to him or her!
- Bring out the art supplies and have your child write cards or notes to people they appreciate. They could make a card for their sibling, grandma, or teacher!
- Help your child come up with an idea to do something special for someone else. Our favorite ideas are making cookies for neighbors, thanking the mailman, and holding the door for a stranger.
Valentine’s Day can be about so much more than just candy and hearts. By sharing the meaning behind the holiday with our children and helping them practice kindness, Valentine’s Day can be a meaningful holiday because of the beautiful truth that we should be kind to everyone!
