Encouraging Your Preschooler to Try New Sports

Many parents, in our technologically centered world, often find themselves struggling to encourage their preschooler to try new sports. Since the sporting realm and skills needed can seem quite daunting to your tiny preschooler, here are a few ways to encourage and boost their confidence as they start looking into playing different sports.

Be Supportive

Especially as your preschooler dips their feet into sports, they will need your support. Let them explore and attempt the sport of their choosing and be supportive of whatever they desire. If you are unsure whether they will like the sport, try placing them in a trial program to let them test the waters before jumping into playing the sport competitively. Still, this testing period of their life ultimately requires your complete support if they are to remain motivated to keep with the sport.

Be Positive

As you take your stance on the sidelines to watch your preschooler play, remember that your little participant is just a child. At some point, they will fail or lose a game and your response is critical to how they will handle the situation. Try to remain positive and encourage them to get right back up and dust themselves off! If they wish to take breaks, let them; you do not want to scare your preschooler away from sports by forcing them to pursue an activity they are not passionate about!

Be an Example

Often the best method of encouragement to move your child to try a new sport or keep them within the activity itself is playing said sport with them. As you pass the ball or spend late nights spotting your gymnast, you are leading and motivating them to have fun while practicing for their sport. If they see you right alongside them going through the motions and practicing, they will be more likely to do the same. Try to practice and participate with them as much as you can so they never feel alone in their efforts to try new things!

Ultimately, your preschooler will be thankful that you are with them as they try new sports. Hopefully, in the future, they will be grateful and will only remember the active participation and love you gave from the sidelines!
