Little Ones, Big Feelings

Little Ones, Big Feelings

Have you ever seen a child having an absolute meltdown somewhere and thought, “I can totally relate?” Most of us have big feelings often, sometimes several times throughout the day. Adults have learned over the years how to properly identify and manage the big emotions we still feel, but small children are still learning and can be easily overwhelmed by feelings and emotions.

We can help children identify and navigate these big, scary feelings. Here are some helpful ways to teach your preschooler to name and manage their emotions:

Model for them.

One of the most important things an adult can do is talk about feelings and be transparent and authentic about how difficult they can be! If you’re sad, say, “I’m having a really hard day today because I’m sad. Let’s take a walk and get some exercise because it’s good for our body and brain!” This not only names a feeling but models a healthy way to deal with it. It also shows your child that nobody outgrows these feelings!

All feelings are okay; all behaviors are not.

Reinforce that it’s absolutely normal and valid to feel big feelings like joy, sadness, disappointment, or anger, but that there are unhealthy and unacceptable ways to act on them. Say out loud, “I understand you’re disappointed that you had to share your toy, but throwing it on the ground is not acceptable behavior.” This validates the emotion while showing that there are better ways to deal with it.

Name the feelings.

It’s important to give a child the words to describe their feelings. Explain words like “disappointment” or “frustration.” Giving your child the vocabulary to talk to you about their emotions will improve your communication with your child as they continue to navigate and identify their feelings.

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Legacy West, we know that learning to deal with your emotions is all part of growing up. That is why we use scientifically proven methods in our curriculum to foster healthy brain development.
