Have you ever seen a child having an absolute meltdown somewhere and thought, “I can totally relate?” Most of us have big feelings often, sometimes several times throughout the day. Adults have learned over the years how to properly identify and manage the big emotions we still feel, but small children are still learning and can be easily overwhelmed by feelings and emotions.
We can help our children start to identify and navigate these big, scary emotions. Here are some helpful ways to begin this process that will last well into early adulthood for your children:
Model feelings and problem-solving skills.
One of the most important things we can do as adults is to talk about our own feelings and be transparent and authentic about how difficult it can be sometimes! Saying, “I’m having a really hard day today because I’m sad. Let’s take a walk and get some exercise because it’s good for our body and brain!” is a great way to show a healthy way to deal with emotions that are big and scary. It also shows your child that nobody outgrows these feelings!
Teach that all feelings are okay; all behaviors are not.
Reinforce that it’s absolutely normal and valid to feel big feelings like joy, sadness, disappointment, or anger, but that there are ways that are not okay to express them. Hitting, yelling, pushing, throwing things, etc., are all unhealthy behaviors that are not acceptable or productive.
Name the feelings.
It’s just as important to give a growing child the words to describe their feelings. Explain words like “disappointment” or “frustration” and help give your child the vocabulary to talk to you about their emotions.
