Preschoolers are predisposed to being curious about everything around them. Naturally, science is a favorite subject for them. Luckily, bringing science to life is a piece of cake because it is literally everywhere! Here are a few ways you can incorporate science in your everyday life with your preschooler.
Nature Walk
As the weather begins to cool off and change from summer to fall, the great outdoors is the perfect setting for your science “classroom.” If you live near a nature preserve, or park, or hiking path, plan a trip to visit it. If you do not, you can go out in your own backyard. As you explore your surroundings, point out the different colored leaves from the trees. Teach your preschooler why the leaves are changing and falling. Find bugs crawling on the ground and investigate them (bring a magnifying glass along for even better views). Tell your preschooler about the parts of a bug. Talk about the weather. Nature has endless lessons to teach those who are willing to look!
Explore Colors
One of the first things your little one learns at the preschool age are her colors. Recognizing red, blue, and yellow is a great start. But you can show your child how to make other colors, too! Just get a nice thick piece of white paper, some watercolor paints, a dish of water, and a paintbrush. Start by making a single color on the page. Then ask your preschooler what they think will happen when you put another color on top. Try it out and see if they were right. See if they can guess which colors make green, orange, and purple. Then keep going to see what kind of hues you can think up next.
Science Experiments
If you get online and search for “science for preschoolers” you will come up with endless projects to try together. Most projects are simple and require no more than everyday products you probably already have around your house. So, spend a Saturday afternoon learning and having fun with your preschooler! The possibilities are endless!
