3 Simple Etiquettes to Teach Your Young One

The etiquettes children learn at a young age can make or break their future. From relationships to career opportunities, good manners are vital in every aspect of life and are largely responsible for long-term success.

From culturally accepted behaviors to ethical and moral obligations like treating people with respect and kindness, etiquettes are a complex network of rules that govern our social and business interactions.

Imagine a culture where there are no universally accepted standards of behavior and good manners. Not a very pleasant thought, is it? Without good manners, there would be no civility and order in society.

Therefore, proper etiquette and rules of behavior need to be an important part of every child’s upbringing. And it starts at home!

Here are some basic etiquette rules that need to be taught to all children at a young age:

Etiquette 101 — Please And Thank You:

Using the basic four phrases should become second nature to children at a young age. The phrases are:

  • Thank You
  • Please/May I?
  • No, Thank You
  • Excuse Me

Parents can lead by example by using these phrases wherever possible. At restaurants when the server brings you food, when trying to navigate a crowded space, when thanking someone for lending a hand—these are just some examples of where you can practice these phrases.

Similarly, when greeting someone, try to be as polite as possible and use the person’s name to who you are addressing. For example, “Have a pleasant day Susan!”

Practicing Humility and Showing Respect:

Respecting others is as important as being humble. Teach your kids the importance of not being greedy and avoiding showing off.

At the same time, teach them to treat others as they’d like to be treated themselves. A child needs to learn to say sorry when they’ve made a mistake or hurt someone.

If they have nothing good to say, they should stay quiet. After all, silence is golden!

Patience Is A Virtue:

As the saying goes, ‘All good things come to those who wait.’ Kids need to be taught the benefits of being patient. Teach your kids the possible problems that one can face with a lack of patience. Again, lead by example by avoiding losing your temper when your child has done something wrong.

Also, practice patience in everyday life by not honking your car horn when traffic is slow, cutting in lines at grocery stores and other places, and snapping at people who are being rude or impolite.

Teach them how to listen to others and how to catch themselves when they start displaying characteristics of impatience.
