While it is never fun to see our child expressing negativity or feeling things such as anger, sadness, or disappointment, it is natural. Here are some ways to teach our children to focus on the positive in a world full of negativity:
Reminders
Make or buy signs with affirming mantras on them such as, “You are loved” or “I am enough” to place around your home or child’s room. These constant reminders will engrain these truths into your child. If decorative signs are not your thing, consider leaving uplifting notes around the house or in their lunchboxes for a midday pick me up.
Encouragement
Take the opportunity to build up and encourage your preschooler if they are having a hard day. Instead of focusing on what’s getting them down, remind them what they do well and the important characteristics they have, such as a warm personality or a kind heart. Likewise, try to incorporate encouragement even if your child is having a good day!
Helping Others
Taking time to help others brings feelings of good will to everyone involved! Promote this kind of positivity by coming up with a way to serve the people around you. This can take many forms such as bringing cookies to a new neighbor or flowers to a sick friend. You could even have a family outing to serve at an animal shelter or other charitable organization. These acts of kindness teach your child selflessness and give them the satisfaction of making a difference.
Gratitude Journal
Some days it is hard to be thankful or find joy! By keeping a gratitude journal, you will be teaching your preschooler from a young age to find positivity in every situation. Your journal can take the form of a notebook or a list on the fridge. Have your child write things they are thankful for from that day before bed. Their appreciation could be for a bike, a butterfly, or a playdate! Whatever it is, allow them to be creative and help them find joy in even the seemingly bad days.
Cultivating positive thinking in your child is important! Building this foundation will result in children who look for the good in themselves and others. That is something we need more of in this world!
