More than 700 million adults cannot read or write and around 100 million children lack access to quality education. Learning about literacy with your preschooler can help to highlight the importance of this worldwide need!
International Literacy Day
Established by UNESCO in 1965 and celebrated in several countries around the world on September 8, International Literacy Day draws attention to the importance of global literacy and accessible education, regardless of a person’s age. The commemorative holiday is often celebrated with events at local libraries and area schools, as well as by regional and national organizations.
Literacy Activities with Your Preschooler
You can celebrate International Literacy Day with your preschooler by participating in literacy activities together.
- Find a good digital children’s library online. Pick out a few books that you can read together and then talk about the power of literacy to bring imaginative worlds alive!
- Set up a video chat with Grandma and Grandpa, and take time to read aloud from a favorite older book. Your little one will be excited for the opportunity to share a beloved story, and the older person will be blessed by the time spent together as well!
- Donate to a local charity that supports global literacy or education, and talk with your preschooler about how your donation makes it possible for children in other parts of the world to go to school and to learn. You can imagine together what a school day might be like for these children!
