As the holiday season comes to a close, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner to remind us that the time to express love and gratitude is not yet over. This raises a number of ideas, questions, and concerns as to how to explain the purpose of Valentine’s Day to your preschooler. The meaning behind this love-filled holiday is one of happiness and gratitude, and these are the two most important emotions to continuously emphasize when explaining the holiday to your child.
Because many people have different variations of what it means to celebrate Valentine’s Day, you can choose what kind of emotions and traditions your preschooler will tie to this special day. While love is an endearing term that can be easily used around family, your child will very likely be involved in some kind of Valentine’s Day activities at school. It is in these situations you can explain the correlation between loving someone and caring for someone. You can help your preschooler decipher the two by using siblings, pets, grandparents, etc., as examples of love, versus classmates, friends, and teachers as examples of people your child cares for.

Kids should be encouraged to be a good friend and nice to others all the time, and Valentine’s Day can be used as a refreshing reminder of this notion.
