Helping Your Preschooler Learn at Home

Helping Your Preschooler Learn at Home at Kids 'R' Kids West Frisco, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your preschooler loves to tumble around the living room, read books to stuffed animals, and prepare lunch in a toy kitchen. Preschoolers learn best through play, and when it comes to helping your little one learn at home, your best option is to encourage what comes naturally and to embrace playtime together!

How preschoolers learn

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has identified play as essential to the learning process for young children. The earliest sensory experiences lead a child first to playing alone and then to playing with others. When children have positive experiences with play, they are better able to develop positive perspectives and attitudes toward future learning.

Learning together at home

You can help your preschooler learn at home in a variety of ways. Just remember the power of play, and jump right into the fun with your little one!

  •  Bake some cookies together, or maybe scramble eggs for breakfast, and use that time to introduce a few new vocabulary words or to talk about concepts such as measuring and mixing. Or, you can count out the quantities together as you measure ingredients for the recipe.
  •  Take some time in the evening to sit in your backyard, or on your front porch. Your little one is already super observant, so all you need to do is ask about the color of a car or the shape of a window to start a conversation about shapes or colors. Take it a step further, and enjoy an “I Spy” game of looking for certain colors or shapes together!
  •  Use playacting to bring the story of a favorite book to life. If additional characters are needed, grab a favorite stuffed animal or two. Even though you both know how the story unfolds, give your preschooler the chance to process the action analytically by asking questions like “What happens now?” and “What do you want to do next?”
