Spring thunderstorms can be a beast! Preschoolers may not be used to their loud claps of thunder and sheets of pouring rain. Young children might begin to exhibit new anxieties during unpredictable weather. Know that it is part of normal development for children to be frightened of thunderstorms as they become more aware of the world around them.
Here are some steps you can take to help your preschooler stay calm during thunderstorms:
Keep your routine the same.
If you are home during a rain storm, it’s important to maintain your normal routine. Little ones can pick up on a change in your behavior which may make them more anxious about the impending weather. Select indoor activities to keep them distracted from the thunderstorm, such as: reading books, playing with toys, listening to music, or watching their favorite movie.
Practice relaxation techniques.
If your child is particularly nervous about the weather and loud noises, take time to practice relaxation techniques. Guided breathing and simple yoga poses for children can help a child to manage their stress over the weather. Watch the raindrops.
From a window or a covered space outside, watch and listen to the rain with your child. This can help them become more familiar with the sounds of a thunderstorm. Watch for puddles to form or show the water drip off the leaves. Share with them how the rain feeds the plants and helps farmers’ food to grow.
Make sure you reinforce to your child that he is safe and he does not need to fear the rain or thunderstorm. Thunderstorms are a part of nature and your child will learn from you how to weather the storm!
