Teaching Your Preschooler About Thanksgiving

Teaching Your Preschooler About Thanksgiving at Kids 'R' Kids Round Rock Teravista, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your preschooler knows what to expect when it comes to Thanksgiving – food, food, and more food! However, due to the holiday marketing overload and what is rapidly becoming a national football holiday, the true Thanksgiving story can sometimes get lost in the stuffing. So if you find yourself wanting your child to understand why everyone is thankful at Thanksgiving, continue reading for some helpful tips below!

Start With the Facts

Your preschooler may very well be curious about where the idea of Thanksgiving all started, and just where Pilgrims and Native Americans come into the mix. Ultimately, the story of Thanksgiving is pretty simple, and will be worth diving into in order to explain the holiday and the importance of caring for others. If you need some help remembering the details or have that child whose curiosity is never satisfied, read more here.

Put Family First

After all the questions have been answered and you’ve probably made a toy bow and arrow or two, then you can take the opportunity to talk about why people are thankful at Thanksgiving. Tell your child the things that you are thankful for in your life – them, the house, the dog, the country you live in. The most important thing is that you are spending time together as a family, if they can say something that they are grateful for then that’s just a plus!

Make Traditions That Last

Don’t feel pressure to have the picture perfect Thanksgiving. Not everyone has the perfect sitcom family, and that’s more than enough reason to be different! Whatever Thanksgiving is for you, own that and make it your preschooler’s as well. Traditions are what you make them, and anything that your child gets to do together with you will be worthwhile. Whether that is having the family over for a big meal or simply sitting around in your pajamas watching football, you will be helping your preschooler build lasting memories of Thanksgiving!
