Preschoolers and Trick-or-Treating

Preschoolers and Trick-or-Treating, preschool, daycare, childcare

Trick or treating with preschoolers can be both exhilarating and exhausting. Children may express excitement over funny costumes, anxiety about scary holiday decorations, and eagerness to eat as much candy as possible in one sitting. With an adventurous spirit and a little planning, though, both you and your preschooler, as well as any others who may join in, can have a Halloween to remember!

Trick-or-treating and children

The first records of children donning costumes, or “guises” and going door-to-door for sweet treats and coins was in 19th century Scotland and Ireland. The practice was introduced in the United States around the turn of the century and grew in popularity during the 1930s. It was not until after the sugar-rationing of World War II, though, that the custom became widely popular and practiced in American culture.

Trick-or-treating with preschoolers

Whether you plan to go with a small group of preschoolers or just your own little one, you can take a few simple steps to reduce the stress and increase the fun of trick or treating with preschoolers.

Map Route

Taking time to map the trick-or-treating route ahead of time will help to minimize last-minute concerns, such as how much light will be available after dark, or where to park and find a bathroom.

Go in a Group

If you are comfortable with the idea, invite your child’s friends and parents to come along. Pretty much everything is more fun with friends, but be sure you take into account your local restrictions on gatherings and social distancing. Play it safe by wearing a mask–it adds to the Halloween fun anyway!

Have Fun

Once all the small details have been determined—what costume to wear, what treat bag to carry, what time to eat all the candy!—relax and enjoy making Halloween trick-or-treating memories with your preschooler!
