Your preschooler loves to watch a favorite show or listen to a favorite song on your phone or your computer. But how much screen time is really okay for your little one? As a parent, you try to strike a balance between too little and too much in almost every area, and the use of technology is no exception.
Guidelines for screen time
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends an hour or less of high-quality digital media per day for children 18 months and older. For children under 18 months, the AAP suggests zero screen time unless it is for a video chat, for example, talking with a parent or grandparent. The AAP recommends that children spend most of their waking hours either playing or learning.
Good practices at home
Even though we live in a media-rich culture, you can make simple choices to guide your preschooler’s exposure to media. When your child is at home with you, you can take a few steps toward a healthy relationship with technology.
- Establish non-tech times or zones: When your child arrives home from school, you may declare the first two hours at home non-tech times, and then you can focus on playing together or fixing the evening meal!
- Engage in media together: If you do have small windows that you choose for technology use, then engage in the media together. Talk while fixing a meal about the show your preschooler watched, and ask questions about how your little one thinks and feels about what was viewed.
- Choose high-quality content: You can choose high-quality videos and music for your child, and then curate them through an online account. You can also take an old phone or other device and retool it so that it is filled with only preschooler-friendly material!
