Creating a Bedtime Routine for Your Preschooler

Bedtime Routine at Kids 'R' Kids Riverstone, preschool, daycare, learning academy

With bedsheets and stuffed animals flying through the air, you find that you are having a hard time keeping your preschooler calm after an exciting day at daycare before bedtime. As you listen to their squeals and little feet patter incessantly through the halls, we have a few tips to help keep your evenings calm and crazy free!

 Set a Wind-down Period

Sometimes your preschooler’s favorite show or toy can get them riled up before bed. Whether they are trying to show you the cool move the character on the show just did or give you a detailed analysis of the utopia they created with their dolls, establishing a wind-down period is imperative when trying to calm them down. Have them clean up the toys spread around during the day or help them decide which clothes to wear for the next morning. A calm activity each night simulates a calm bedtime!

Establish a Bedtime

Similar to setting a timer in your preschooler’s mind, you must establish a set bedtime each night. This will help signal to your child the time has come to be peaceful and get settled under the covers. Have them start to move toward their bedroom by choosing their own pajamas or stuffed animal to sleep with through the night. While certain special occasions can throw this time off, try to still have something to indicate that bedtime has not changed. “It’s seven o’clock, so where have your pajamas gone?”

Give Them Multiple Options Before Bed

If your child has settled into bed and is still a little jumping bean, try offering fun bedtime options to settle them down. Make sure the activity is not too stimulating! “Tonight, you can choose to listen to either a bedtime story or some music.” These options will deter a sense of forcefulness while keeping the bedtime environment a quiet and peaceful place.

By the night’s end, as you crack the door on your soundless sleeping preschooler, you will have completely forgotten the chaos that occurred only moments ago. With these tips, your days of spastic preschoolers during bedtime are a thing of the past!
