Teaching Preschoolers About the Summer Solstice

solstice

This year, the summer solstice will occur on Thursday, June 21. The summer solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the year. This is a fun science lesson to share with our preschoolers!

The word solstice derives from the Latin words sol, meaning sun, and sistere, meaning stand still. Summer solstice is the longest day because we have the most hours of sunlight. The tilt of the northern hemisphere is most towards the sun and marks the official beginning of summer! The summer solstice is celebrated all over the world. Here are some ways you can celebrate with your child!

Read Books About the Solstice

Help your child understand what the solstice is about by reading some books about it! Check your local library for some books geared toward children and help them understand the science behind the solstice.

Play Outside

Arguably the best way to celebrate the longest day of the year is to spend it having fun outside! Go swimming, have a picnic, go on a walk, or play at the park and enjoy the many hours of sunlight.

Make a Sun Craft

Cut a circle out of cardstock that is small enough to fit inside a gallon-sized plastic bag. Squeeze some red, orange, and yellow paint onto the paper before placing into the plastic bag. Make sure the bag is sealed tightly, then have your child swirl the paint around to cover the circle completely, making a sun! Remove the sun from the bag and put on paper that has been brushed with paint. Finally, after the paint dries, glue the circle into the middle of the painted spot!

Use these ideas to celebrate summer solstice with your child! They will enjoy learning about the science behind the solstice with these activities.
