Spring Cleaning With Your Preschooler

There’s a phrase that says “many hands make light work,” but it’s probably true that whoever said that first didn’t have preschool-age children around when it was time for spring cleaning. Kids can and should absolutely be involved in household chores, and there are ways to keep them engaged and helpful!

The trick with housework for younger kids is to keep it short, keep it fun, and keep it simple. Ensure that tasks assigned take only about 10-15 minutes and that they can have fun doing it. Sometimes you may have to double-check their work, but teaching them at a young age to help the family is great practice.

Believe it or not, your preschooler will get a real kick out of vacuuming, so take advantage of that while you can! Assign a small space, like an area rug, and let them be responsible for vacuuming it.

Skate Dusting

If you have hardwood or tile floors, it’s likely that there are dust bunnies lurking along baseboards and in corners. This is even worse if pets are involved! Have your preschooler put on fuzzy socks and “skate” along the floors to collect dust and dirt, and then go outside and shake off the dust bunnies.

Clean out and Donate

Spring is the perfect time to go through closets, toy chests, and playrooms to collect and donate what is no longer worn or played with. Giving your child ownership of this activity will not only clear out space but will probably avoid any meltdowns due to getting rid of beloved items.

Get Your Groove On

Make a playlist of fun songs with your child, and then groove, dance, and sing while cleaning the house. Randomly call out “Dance Party!” and everyone has to stop and take a dance break!
