Questions to Ask Your Preschooler Instead of, “How was your day?”

Questions to Ask Your Preschooler Instead of “How was your day?”

We all look forward to picking up our preschoolers from school and asking them about their day. But if you’re anything like most parents, “How was your day?” doesn’t get very far with your child. We’ve compiled a list of fifteen meaningful questions to jump start conversations with your preschooler after school!

  1. Who did you play with today? What did you do with them?
  2. What or who made you smile today?
  3. I had a granola bar for a snack today. What did you have?
  4. Did you play any fun games at recess? Who did you play them with?
  5. Tell me something new you learned today. Will you teach it to me?
  6. What was the best part of your day?
  7. Did anything make you sad?
  8. What did you laugh at today?
  9. Is there anything you’d like to do this weekend?
  10. What made you feel loved today?
  11. Who had the best lunch at school? What was in it?
  12. Did anyone do something nice for you? Did you do anything kind for someone else?
  13. Is there anyone you’d like to become friends with?
  14. Were there any rules that were hard to follow today?
  15. What do you feel proud of today?

Give these questions a try after school today and see if your conversation is deeper! A good thing to keep in mind as you try out these questions is to be specific. Before asking about your child’s day, try to give them some information about yours!
