Coping With a Child Who Doesn’t Enjoy Their Daycare

If you’re a working parent, you’ve probably had your fair share of experiences with daycare. There is a myriad of reasons why daycare is wonderful. Not only do they provide all the love, care and attention to your little one as you work, daycare programs also enable your child to grow mentally and learn invaluable social skills.

Nevertheless, daycare isn’t puppies and rainbows all the time. It’s quite normal for kids to go through phases where they absolutely hate their daycare. This is not only a hard time for the kids but can be pretty tough on parents as well. Nobody likes to drop off their crying child at daycare. It makes you feel like your abandoning them in a dark, evil place. But fortunately, there are a few things that can help you improve the situation.

Arrange a Meeting with the Teachers

If your kid is not enjoying daycare, the first thing you should do is speak with the teachers. Parents often forget that their kids’ daycare teachers have seen it all. Arrange a face-to-face meeting and try to work out what’s wrong. Ask them if your child only cries when they’re dropped off or if they’re sulky throughout the day. Is there a particular thing or time of the day that makes them upset?

This allows you to hear the teacher’s opinion on your child’s behavior and what they think is happening, while providing the opportunity to tell them what you’ve been experiencing. Generally, the teachers will be happy to work with you and attempt to find a solution to the problem.

Find Ways of Making Their Day Special

Another way of making daycare more enjoyable for your child is adding just a little bit of something special to their day—maybe hiding a little treat in their lunch or letting them pick their own outfit for the day. Creating a reward system for good behavior and productive days can also be an effective strategy.

Check In

We’re living in a digital age, and these days, teachers are super accessible. You can easily check-in to see how you’re little one is doing at daycare. You can also ask the supervisors at your child’s daycare for more frequent updates if the stress is really getting to you.
