Activities That Teach Preschoolers about Emotions

Activities to Teach Preschoolers about Emotions at Kids 'R' Kids Legacy West, preschool, daycare, learning academy

Emotions are a huge part of our lives, and they have so much influence over how we react to and communicate with those around us. Preschoolers are just now beginning to discover their emotions, and it’s important for parents to make sure that they have a good understanding of themselves so they can regulate their feelings and learn to live with emotional intelligence.

Watch Inside Out  with your preschool child.

Inside Out is a Pixar movie that looks into what happens behind the scenes of a child’s mind. This movie will normalize emotions to your child and help them to understand that emotions are part of everyday life. After watching the movie, you can ask your child which character they related to the most, and you can then decide how to help them out with the emotions that they’re dealing with. “Are you feeling like Joy today or are you feeling a little more like Sadness?” While a young child may not fully understand the message of the movie, it can be used as a tool to learn about feelings.

Read books to your preschoolers about emotions.

Books are also a great resource to use to get your child to understand their own emotions as well as the emotions of those around them. When you read the stories of the emotions of the fictional characters, they will be able to relate them to their own emotions. Hearing the stories of how other people have managed their feelings will give them ideas on how to manage their own.

Let your preschooler draw different emotions on face templates.

There are online templates for faces that you can let your preschooler draw on. Ask them to draw the face that they are feeling, and talk to them about their pictures. You can also draw faces for them and ask them what emotion it depicts. These exercises will develop emotional intelligence in your child and help them to understand not only their own feelings but also the feelings that those around them are experiencing.
