Teach Your Preschooler About Outer Space With These 5 Easy Ideas!

Kids show intense curiosity about outer spaces! Help your preschooler grow in curiosity, and explore outer space with these easy ideas.

The Sun and Planets

One of the easiest ways to teach your preschooler about outer space is to start with the sun and planets. Explain that the sun is a star and it is what gives light and life to our solar system. The planets orbit around the sun. Some planets are bigger than others and some are closer to the sun than others. Earth is just the right size and distance from the sun, which is why we have water, air, and land – and can support life!

Stars

Another way to teach your preschooler about outer space is to talk about the stars. Point out the stars in the night sky and explain that they are giant balls of gas that are very far away. You can also talk about how the stars look different from up close. For instance, the star Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, but it looks like a tiny dot when you see it up close.

If you have a telescope, you can show your preschooler some of the different types of stars that exist. There are red giants, white dwarfs, and brown dwarfs. Explain how different types of stars have different temperatures and sizes. You can also show your preschooler some of the constellations in the night sky.

If you live in a city, you can still teach your preschooler about stars by visiting a planetarium. Planetariums have special projectors that show what the night sky looks like from different parts of the world. You can also learn about different types of stars and how they change over time.

Galaxies

One of the most fascinating things about outer space is the vast number of galaxies that exist. Help your child understand this concept by showing them pictures of different galaxies. You can find these online or in books. Talk about how each galaxy is unique, with its own size, shape, and color. Explain how our own Milky Way galaxy is just one of the billions of galaxies in the universe.

Take a look at pictures of different planets with your child. Talk about how some planets are very large, while others are quite small. Explain that some planets are made mostly of gas and others are made of rock. Help your child understand that there is a huge variety of planets out there and that our own planet Earth is just one type of planet.

Show your child pictures of different stars. Talk about how stars come in different colors, sizes, and shapes. Help them understand that stars are enormous compared to our own planet Earth. Explain that stars are so far away from us that they seem like tiny dots in the sky.

Point out constellations to your child in the night sky. Explain how people have used constellations to help them navigate for centuries. Help your child find some simple constellations, such

Moons

There are plenty of ways to teach your preschooler about outer space, and one of the best is to focus on the moon. After all, it’s the closest thing to us in space! Here are some easy ideas to get you started.

First, take a look at some pictures of the moon together. Talk about how it looks different at different times of the month. You can even show your child how to make their own moons with crayons or paint.

Next, point out the moon in the night sky. See if you can spot any of the major features, like the Sea of Tranquility. If you have a telescope, let your child take a look through it. They’ll be amazed at what they see!

Finally, there are plenty of books about the moon that your preschooler will love. Check out some of our favorites below.

Telescopes

One more great way to teach your preschooler about outer space is to use a telescope. Let them look at the moon and stars and talk about what they are seeing. You can also find planets with a telescope and show them to your child. This is a wonderful and engaging way to introduce them to the solar system.

Another way to use a telescope is to take turns pointing it at different objects in the sky. You can point out constellations, planets, and even satellites.

If you don’t have a telescope, you can still use binoculars to show your child the moon and stars. You can also use binoculars to find birds and other animals in the distance. This is a great way to teach your child about nature and the world around them.
