April showers bring May flowers, and push kids and parents indoors! However, this is a perfect time of year to teach your kids about rainstorms! (After they’ve spent time splashing around outside, of course!)
- Check out books from your local library about weather and lightning, or stories with characters in a thunderstorm! Talk to your child about what happened in the story and ask her questions about the weather.
- Use time in the car to teach kids about the different kinds of clouds and talk about what kind of clouds produce rain. At home, use cotton balls to make cloud art or use marshmallows and paint to stamp out shapes of clouds.
- Spend time watching and listening to the rain with your child. This can help them become more familiar with the sounds of a thunderstorm. Watch for puddles to form or show the water drip off the leaves. Share with them how plants are fed and why we need the rain.
- During a rainy day outside, make a simple rainstick from materials you have at home and in the pantry. You and your child will be able to listen to and explore the sound of the rain, and keep them busy inside!
- A rain gauge can be an interesting way to help kids study rain. While you put together your rain gauge, explain that meteorologists use a rain gauge to know the amount of rain that has fallen in the area. Then watch your local weather to see if other areas picked up the same amount of rain.
These activities can be an excellent way to teach your kids about storms and spark their interest in science and weather – in addition to keeping them busy indoors!
