Explaining Veterans Day to Preschoolers

Explaining Veterans Day to Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Hamilton Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

Veterans Day is an important day that encompasses many pieces that may be difficult for a preschooler to understand. Yet there are some familiar concepts that will help your preschooler start to understand its significance. A few examples are bravery, patriotism, and service.

Bravery

Has your preschooler ever had to be brave? If she is having trouble thinking of a time where she was brave, help her to think of a situation. Next, you can discuss how many different people have had to be brave. These could be teachers, friends, family members, or fire fighters.

Patriotism

Second, talk about what patriotism means. It does not have to be a complicated definition. It can even be as simple as loving our country, and celebrating values like freedom.

Service

Next it is important to discuss what a veteran is. A veteran is a person who is brave, patriotic, and has served our country through the military. A person in the military has the job of defending our country and keeping it free. There are different branches of the military they can serve through: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Corp, and Space Force. A veteran could be someone still in the military or not. It could also be someone we know! Many veterans live and work around us!

Veterans

Finally, you can put all the pieces together and explain how Veterans Day is a special opportunity every year that celebrates the brave, patriotic, military person who has served our country. You can focus on one or two of the values your family loves and be grateful for the veterans who preserve them for you.

Celebrate

There are different ways you can help your preschooler celebrate Veterans Day. You can write a thank you card to a veteran, color a picture, count how many American flags you see while running errands, attend a parade or ceremony, look for patriotic license plates, or learn a patriotic song. Hero Dad, H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet, Lil’ Army Soldier, Veterans Heroes in Our Neighborhood, and Hero Mom are a few books that talk about Veterans Day.

Explaining what Veterans Day means may feel like a difficult task. However, it does not have to be. Hopefully, you feel more prepared to be successful in breaking this special day down into relatable pieces for your preschooler.
