Fun with Food for Preschoolers

Fun with Food for Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Hamilton Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

Did your parents ever tell you not to play with your food? Have you ever said it to your preschoolers? If so, you should probably read this book: Don’t Play with Your Food by Bob Shea. Then, forget that children are not supposed to play with their food, and have some fun with food instead!

Banana Caterpillars

You will need a banana, nut butter, flaked coconut, 6-10 thin pretzel sticks, and 2 raisins.

  • Peel and slice the banana into bite-sized, round pieces.
  • Create the “caterpillar” by putting a little nut butter between two segments and pressing them together.
  • Sprinkle some coconut flakes over the banana pieces and lightly press with your fingertips.
  • Use a little more nut butter to stick the raisin eyes to the front end.
  • Break up the pretzel sticks as needed to make legs and antennae.

Toast Animals

You will need a piece of toasted bread; your favorite nut butter, Nutella, or cream cheese; and assorted cut fruit pieces.

  • Put your favorite spread on the piece of toast.
  • Use bananas, strawberries, blueberries, raisins, or apples to design an animal face.

Grape Sculptures

You will need grapes and toothpicks. That’s it!

  • Stick the toothpicks into the grapes to create anything from a tiny sculpture to a tall skyscraper.
  • Make sure you eat some grapes as you go.
  • Monitor young children carefully to prevent them from biting into a toothpick!

Monster Cupcakes

You will need to make your favorite cupcake recipe or, to save time, purchase some store bought cupcakes along with candy corn, gummy rings, or other candy.

  • If you are baking your cupcakes, let your child help with the mixing and frosting.
  • Set out different types of candies for them to use to decorate the cupcakes.
  • Monsters are not just for Halloween! These are especially fun to do with candy corn if you read the Bob Shea book.

Preschoolers love helping in the kitchen, and they love being creative. These recipes combine those two activities in the best way. You may even be able to get a picky eater to try something new. Making food fun can encourage healthy eating!
