Back-to-School Preschool Routines

Back-to-School Preschool Routines at Kids 'R' Kids Hamilton Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

Gone are the “lazy days of summer,” and here to stay for a while are busy school days.  As nice as it is to not be tied to a schedule so tightly in the summer, there is something comforting about having a well planned out back-to-school routine as well.

Preschoolers are creatures of habit, but they must be trained to form those habits.  Going back-to-school or starting preschool for the first time requires some getting used to.  Starting at least two weeks before school resumes, put your little one back on a school day schedule to have a smoother transition.  Some things to include in your routine are sleeping and waking times, eating times, and getting ready for school procedures.

Sleep

Children ages 3-5 years old need between 10-13 hours of sleep each day (24-hour period).  Some schools include a rest time in the afternoon and that would deduct some of the overnight sleeping hours your child needs.  Once you figure out what time your child needs to get up in order to be at school on time, count back 10-13 hours to set his bedtime at night and stick to it.

Morning Prep

Mornings can be hectic and rushed if you have not prepared things in advance or left enough time for getting ready.  If your preschooler does not eat breakfast at school, you will need to make sure they eat a nutritious meal before leaving.  Plan the mealtime into your routine and start getting up early and eating breakfast on the school schedule before heading back to class.  Then, find out when lunch will be at school, so your preschooler can get used to eating lunch at that time.

Practice

Finally, it may take several days for your child to really catch on to the new routine, so practice getting up on time, getting dressed (lay out clothes the night before to help things go smoother), making the bed, eating, brushing teeth, gathering needed supplies, and being “ready for school” in the days leading up to the start of the school year and the transition from summer to school will be much smoother!
