The Fourth of July is a special time of celebration for America and its families. There are many festive activities, including parades, barbecues, and of course fireworks! As your preschooler is getting older, there are also good opportunities for them to learn more about the history of the holiday.
Below are some children’s books that help teach about the holiday and can also help your family celebrate Independence Day.
If You Lived at the Time of the American Revolution by Kay Moore
Though this book has many words and pages, there are a few specific pages that are neat for your preschooler to see. For instance, pages 10-13 show detailed pictures about how colonial people dressed and what their houses looked like. Also, pages 46-49 explain how colonists at that time shopped for their food and clothes.
Flags Over America by Cheryl Harness
This book is filled with beautiful illustrations! It shows the different American flags from our history as a nation, as well as different colonial flags of the time.
The Night Before the Fourth of July (From “The Night Before” series) by Natasha Wing
This book is a great fit for preschoolers, as it is designed for the 3-5 age bracket. Using fun rhymes, its story line captures the fun July 4th celebrations that families enjoy today.
Coloring Books
If you type the phrase “Fourth of July coloring books” into most big box store search engines, there will be many good July 4th activity books for children. Many of these stores should have in-store options, as well.
Independence Day is special for many reasons. Whether or not your family goes to any specific festivities, or stays at home, your preschooler can get a taste of the holiday by looking at child-friendly Fourth of July books.
