How Do You Get Preschool Children to Do Chores?

How Do You Get Preschool Children to Do Chores? at Kids 'R' Kids Hamilton Mill, preschool childcare, daycare

It’s important to provide your preschooler with the opportunity to take on a bit more responsibility as they get older, and chores are a wonderful way to implement these increments of change. It can be difficult to find the right type of task to give to a preschooler, but we’ve figured it out for you. Keep reading to learn how you can get your preschooler to do chores this summer.

Make a chore chart!

First things first—create a chore chart! Your little one can earn stickers or gold stars for simple tasks like making their bed, putting their toys away, or helping you carry in lightweight groceries. Once they earn a certain amount of stars or stickers, you can have a family pizza party or movie marathon! Using rewards as incentive will motivate your little one to complete their chores and do their very best.

Create a positive environment.

Remember to enforce doing chores as a positive, productive activity rather than a form of punishment. Adding negative connotation to these chores can either cause your child to lose interest in the task or complete each task half-heartedly. A positive attitude (and praise or rewards for a job well done) will help your little one accomplish anything on their to-do list.

Be consistent.

Try to remain consistent with daily chores you give to your preschooler, such as tidying up their room each night before bed or practicing their reading skills for thirty minutes each day. Children thrive when they have a set routine, and your continuous encouragement will keep them on track with their assigned chores and personal goals.

By giving your little one more responsibility at home (and giving them positive feedback when they get the job done), they will be more inclined to carry out these great habits elsewhere. Correct them when they’re not completing the job the right way and praise them for their hard work. Positive results are sure to follow.
