Teaching your Preschooler to Appreciate Gifts

Teaching your Preschooler to Appreciate Gifts at Kids 'R' Kids Hamilton Mill, Daycare, childcare, preschool, learning academy

Appreciating gifts is a mark of good manners; learning to appreciate gifts as a preschooler will create an adult with a pleasant, receptive disposition. Try these ideas for teaching your preschooler to love the giver as much as the gift.

Return a gift.

Every gifter deserves a gift. It is fun to give a return gift to someone even if the gift is small. Keep a tube of tiny bows so your child can turn any item into an instant gift. Write a small thank you card to attach to the gift. Let your child tell you what to write and then let them practice writing their name or making their own mark at the bottom of the card.

Show the gift.

If a thank you card is not an option, send a thank you video. Use your cell phone to record your child appreciating the gift. This is a great idea if your child loves being in the spotlight. If your child is more shy, take a photo with them using the gift. Have your child find the best place for the picture: inside or outside? Showing the gift or using the gift? Then send a short message with the gift telling the gifter about the process. They will appreciate the thought and time you put into loving their generosity.

Give a gift.

After the joy of receiving a gift, give your child the opportunity to see how it feels to give a gift. Make a list of people to give gifts to for no special reason, maybe an elderly neighbor or a teacher. Then talk with your child about how the person’s acceptance of the gift made them feel. Did they wait for a thank you call or card? How happy were they when the card came? Remind them of this next time you write a thank you card.

What do you do when you receive a gift you do not like? Stamp your feet? Cry? Hold your breath? Tell the person you don’t want it! Those might work for a toddler, but as your child grows, they need to learn better methods of accepting and appreciating gifts. Soon your child may become a better gift giver than gift receiver.
