Sunshine and Smarts: Summer Learning at Home with Preschoolers

For some, summer break cannot be beat! There are many exciting parts of your preschooler’s summer break. This does not mean that your preschooler cannot experience summer learning fun along the way, too. Here are some easy and stress-free ideas for summer learning at home with your preschooler.

Local Library Reading Programs

Check your local library for preschool-friendly summer reading programs. Your preschooler may be able to earn prizes while you get the chance to read books to your child from the comfort of your own home.

Library Trips…Over and Over!

Whether you desire to sign up for a summer reading program or not, your preschooler can still enjoy and benefit from multiple trips to the library. This gives your child ample opportunities to borrow fresh books that you can both look at while back at home together.

Simple Science Experiments

Here is a simple science experiment with hardly any preparation time required. Using only Skittles, a plate, milk and/or water, your preschooler can practice making predictions about what might happen when you pour different liquids over Skittles. You could redo this experiment several times in a row, just by changing the liquid type. Another simple experiment is to have your child guess what will happen when squirting lemon juice on baking soda.

Time in the Kitchen

Whether it is cooking or baking with you, your preschooler can practice following directions while also looking at basic fractions. Nobody said your recipe must be homemade. Baking out of a box works, too! This kitchen time can be a healthy mix of bonding and bonus learning.

Using any of the above ideas, your preschooler will not even know learning is taking place! Summer break can be fun, educational, and imaginative. Take a few pictures along the way, too, and many memories can be made this summer break.
