When the weather outside is frightful and your moods are less than delightful, don’t sacrifice fun to stay warm and dry. Try some of these boredom-banishing indoor activities to get moving, start creating, and keep giggling.

  • Create an obstacle course with cushions, pillows, and furniture.
  • Do an in-house scavenger hunt.
  • Decorate t-shirts with fabric paint and markers, then put on a fashion show.
  • Write and illustrate a story and read it aloud, or write a play to perform for the family.
  • Learn how to fold different styles of paper airplanes and race them.
  • Make your own play dough and experiment with adding food coloring and scents.
  • Practice saying tongue twisters and silly rhymes.
  • Make your own musical instruments from things you can find around the house, then put on a concert.
  • Watch family videos and look through special photos and memories together.
  • Start a family scrapbook together.
  • Build a blanket and pillow fort to snuggle in.
  • Make your own pizzas from scratch.
  • Create a secret code to write messages back and forth.
  • Do blind taste-testing challenges with different foods and drinks from the kitchen.
  • Bake treats or cook a meal for a neighbor.
  • Have a family game night, with board games, cards or charades.
  • Research something you’re curious about, then teach the family about it with a poster or presentation.

Have a copy of this list on the fridge or in the play area. The next time your kids say they’re bored and that they don’t have anything to do, encourage them to take a peek at the list. There’s something there to please just about everybody.
