Snack: Rainbow Toast

Rainbow Toast is a great way to explore colors in a yummy way!

When is it ok to play with your food? When it is made from a rainbow that is kid-created! This simple activity uses materials found in the kitchen and is a fun way to keep your child busy while making a delicious snack. One of the best parts of this activity is mixing the colors and ingredients, so be sure to let your child take charge. No color purple in the box of food coloring? No problem! Just mix red and blue together. Any guesses how to make orange? You can even practice math skills by counting the drops of color and adding them together.

Ingredients:

  • White Bread
  • Milk (or milk substitute)
  • Butter
  • Food coloring
  • 4 clear plastic cups
  • Plastic spoon
  • 4 clean Paint Brushes
  • Toaster

Directions:

  • Pour ¼ cup of milk in four different cups
  • Add a few drops of food coloring in each cup so you’ll have one yellow, red, green, and blue mixtures
  • Stir each cup of milk with its food coloring
  • Take one or two pieces of bread and begin painting the different colors on your bread…be creative
  • Once your bread is painted to your liking, have an adult help you toast your bread in the toaster
  • Once your bread is lightly toasted and warm, you can add butter and cinnamon for taste

Literacy Connection: The Peace Book by Todd Parr is a simple change of pace about what peace can mean for children and is illustrated with all the vibrant colors of the rainbow.  Take the time to discuss with your child what mindfulness feels like and how important it is for being true to who you are.
