Snack: Lady Bug Treats

Fruity Lady Bug Treats are the cutest and yummiest ever!

Instructions:
2 red apples
¼ cup of raisins
Tablespoon of peanut butter
8 thin pretzel sticks

  1. Slice apples in half from top to bottom and scoop out the cores using a knife or melon baller. If you have an apple corer, core them first, then slice. Place each apple half flat side down on a small plate.
  2. Dab peanut butter on to the back of the ‘lady bug’, then stick raisins onto the dabs for spots. Use this method to make eyes too. Stick one end of each pretzel stick into a raisin, then press the other end into the apples to make antennae.

Literacy Connection:

Did you know that ladybugs complete a metamorphosis like butterflies do? And have you ever heard a preschooler practice saying metamorphosis as a new word? It’s delightful.

Why not take the time to create a healthy snack together and see the value in learning about counting, measuring, cooking, designing, and textures to create an edible work of art!

And because ladybugs are helpful predators that protect the garden, it’s a great way to introduce the science of life cycles, characteristics of natural elements, and insect anatomy.

Complete the activity with a dramatic reading of Eric Carle’s The Grouchy Ladybug and see what it takes for one ladybug to transform itself into a creature who can share and be pleasant. Doesn’t the world need more of that?

ALLERGY CAUTION: Use a nut-free alternative for peanut butter allergies.
