Craft: Autumn Salt Painting

Bring fall colors alive!
Autumn can be a season when colors come alive for a brief time before fading into the muted tones of winter. So why not celebrate the time of year with this amazing glue and salt painting? It is also a great way to introduce the science of color. Fine motor skills are at play while squeezing the glue and using the eyedropper and drawing with glue is a new way to develop eye-hand coordination. Watching the particles of salt absorb the colors is a fascinating process that will be sure to make this craft a big hit!
Gather:
12” x 12” piece of cardboard or foam board
Table salt
White school glue
Eyedropper
Food coloring
3-4 small cups or bowls
Water
Directions:
1. On your cardboard square, carefully squeeze out the glue to make the shape of a leaf
2. Cover the glue by pouring salt over it
3. Shake off excess salt
4. Add about 8-10 drops of food coloring in each cup to make yellow, orange, and red. Have your child help you problem solve how to make orange with the colors provided (red and yellow)
5. Add just a teaspoon or so of water to each cup
6. Using the eyedropper, fill it with yellow and squeeze it carefully over the salt/glue mix on your cardboard to make up the bottom part of the leaf
7. Repeat step six with orange to cover the salt/glue mixture on the mid-section of your leaf
8. Finally, using your red color, fill the eyedropper and squeeze over the top portion of the leaf
Let your leaf dry and enjoy your colorful creation!
