The title of this article alone is enough to scare anyone off. Traveling can be tough in and of itself, but traveling with kids in tow is on whole other level. Never fear – Kids ‘R’ Kids has your back. Below are our top tips for traveling with kids:
Practice Good ‘Sleep Science’
Make sure that while you’re away from home, kids can still have the comforts of home. Favorite white noise machine? Bring it. Favorite stuffed animal? Throw it in the bag. Encourage quality time together – not screen time. Talk with your kids before bed; you can even read them a bedtime story. By showing your kids that you care about their feelings and validating them, we can expect to have a happier, more fulfilling time together – not just on this family vacation, but always.
Stay Patient, Stay Positive
Look, we get it – traveling with kids is tough. But it doesn’t have to be miserable. Try and focus on the positive nature of it. You’re getting to spend valuable time with your kids, after all! Be patient – any sleep problems are always temporary. Your kiddo will eventually adjust to their new (and temporary) surroundings.
Choose a Start Time – and Stick to It
Kids with sensory issues may have a hard time if you’re too early or late to an event – especially when it feels like the biggest event in the world. Make sure you have a solid plan in place prior to traveling, so that your kids know what they’re getting into and can hopefully prepare accordingly.
Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains help tremendously during the travel process. You never know what a hotel or AirBnb will be like until you get there. If there’s an unwanted light source coming from somewhere, blackout curtains can be the answer to getting a good night’s sleep.
Prepare, Then Fun!
Traveling with kids can be tough, but also fun. Plan ahead, create a familiar routine, keep your current sleep routine, and you should be on the road to Fun Town, USA in no time.
