Children’s Books and Movies to Celebrate Black History Month

Children’s Books and Movies to Celebrate Black History Month at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

Celebrating the important accomplishments of African Americans throughout American history (and beyond) is worth noting. Learning about the rich history of these African American accomplishments is something even for preschoolers to learn to appreciate.

On history.com, it states that American Presidents have formally acknowledged February as Black History Month since 1976. The following are books and movies that can be used during Black History Month, in both the childcare setting and at home. The first two were written by Lesa Cline-Ransome.

The Power of Her Pen: The Story of Groundbreaking Journalist Ethel L. Payne

This biography is about one of the first black journalists, Ethel Payne. It is written in a picture book format. The illustrations are captivating, and the book highlights Ms. Payne’s ability to be brave and ask hard questions—even in the White House! She brought about awareness of the need for equality.

Game Changers: The Story of Venus and Serena Williams

In this biography, your child will learn about tennis stars, Venus and Serena Williams. Your preschooler can learn about the William sister’s childhood and how they became accomplished athletes through grit and hard work.

Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad

This Amazon’s Teacher Pick was written by Ellen Levine and Kadir Nelson. It teaches children about the life of Henry Brown and how he literally mailed himself to a life of freedom!

The Journey of Henry Box Brown, Told by Alfre Woodard

Your preschooler can enjoy this short movie that goes right along with the Henry Brown story listed above. The movie is recommended for ages five and up.

Your public library should have a variety of books that will be great additions to use for Black History Month. You can ask your child’s preschool teacher for recommendations, too. Great discussions can happen, even with young ones. It is good to positively influence the next generation to be respectful to all.
