When temperatures start to cool and leaf shades darken to crimson and brown, you find that conversations with your preschooler turn to hayrides and Halloween costumes, fall festivals and county fairs. You do not have to go anywhere, though, to enjoy autumn-inspired fun with your little one. Take advantage of your next rainy afternoon at home and break out paint and glue for a fall-themed craft. Whatever the activity, you and your preschooler will have fun making memories together!
Autumn and harvest
Autumn, or “fall,” as it is called in the United States, marks one of the four temperate seasons observed annually. This season was often referred to as the harvest season prior to the 16th century, when agricultural rhythms played a larger role in communities. Today, autumn marks the return to the school year and the start to the football season as well as a time for favorite holiday celebrations, such as Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Simple Crafts with Preschoolers
Take advantage of all the yellow and gold leaves piling up in your backyard by using them for leaf-inspired seasonal crafts:
Leaf Necklace: With a strip of ribbon or sturdy string, you and your preschooler can create a one-of-kind necklace. You might want to add a few orange, red, or brown beads between the leaves as well.
Leaf Painting: Create original artwork by painting one side of a leaf with watercolors, and then press the painted side down on a piece of craft paper. Your little one will love the vibrant colors and impressions that emerge. Share the fun by tucking a few into letters to a favorite aunt or the grandparents.
Leaf Creatures: Gather glue, pipe cleaners, and whatever else you have on hand—googly eyes, gold star stickers, construction paper—and make small people or creatures out of the fall leaves you have gathered!
