One thing I’ve certainly learned as a parent: preschoolers meet developmental milestones at their own pace. One starts pedaling a bike long before he can zip a jacket, and another learns to undress before he learns his colors. But don’t sweat it. Your child’s skills will come along in due time. If you’re worried though, here are some activities you can do to help your preschooler develop their fine motor skills:
Hand Strength
It might be a bit messy, but letting your child play with playdough will help her develop strength in her hands for all fine motor skills. If you want to avoid the mess and you have leftover Easter eggs, let your child practice opening the eggs. For some added practice, help them put the eggs back together again! When your little one is ready and you have time to oversee, let your child use a child-safe pair of scissors to make cuts on paper or a paper plate.
Tracing
Tracing is another great activity that will help build other skills. Simply draw lines or large letters on paper and instruct your child to trace the line with their finger. Up the activity by adding a Q-tip, then a crayon. Continue with scissors practice by having your child cut along the lines.
Lacing
Let your child practice lacing a shoe or push Q-tips through the holes of a colander from the kitchen. This helps your child with their tripod grasp and hand-eye coordination by trying to place a small object through a small hole. This activity may take your child some time to master, but make sure you offer encouragement along the way!
Sensory Bins
Find a bin large enough to hold a few pounds of rice and drop in some small objects for your child to find while digging through the rice with their hands. They will have fun searching for dinosaur erasers (fossils!) or Legos, or other objects from around your house. Make the cleanup easy by putting the bin on a garbage bag or recycled newspaper!
