“Paying it Forward” is the act of repaying a good deed bestowed upon you by doing good for another person. The weeks leading up to Thanksgiving offer a unique opportunity to teach your preschooler about the quality of expressing gratitude by giving to others. However, volunteering with a young one can be tough. Here are a few suggestions for how you can get started:
Pick an easy task
Unfortunately, preschool students can have short attention spans, and doing deeds that benefit only other people may tend to seem a little disinteresting to the younger among us. Therefore, choose a task with a foreseeable goal (such as cleaning up a local park or donating food to a homeless shelter) and help motivate your child to accomplish that goal.
Be a role model
The first person your child will see being generous to others is YOU! Therefore, it’s important to practice what you preach and always explain what you are doing to help others and why it is important. Children love to copy their parents, so make volunteering part of your regular family schedule and a wonderful new habit will soon unfold in your preschooler’s life.
Get others involved
If you’re cleaning up a city park or beach or doing some other monotonous task with your child, the boredom tends to set in quickly. Therefore, it’s important to ask other family members and friends to join you as you set upon improving the lives of others. Find a time when others can meet you to visit a nursing home or go read to sick children in the hospital, make it a regular activity, and you’ll plant the seeds of a thankful life in your preschooler.
