Preparing Your Preschooler for Halloween
With October here, it’s officially time to get spooky! For the parent of a preschooler, this could mean introducing your child to the holiday for the first time. This has the potential to be an intimidating yet fun experience for your preschooler. Here are some quick and easy tips for how you can best prepare your child for the big day.
Tell your child what to expect
Even if your child doesn’t go to a haunted house or monster mash, the experience of Halloween can be pretty surreal and daunting. Prior to October 31, take some time to talk to your child about what Halloween is and some of the traditions involved. Be sure to help them understand the difference between what is real and what is make-believe. This can also help when trying to reduce the impact of seeing a display or costume that is inappropriate for young children.
Talk about Halloween safety
The stories of “razor blades hidden in candied apples” is (more often than not) just a cautionary urban legend, but it’s still worth it to discuss proper safety etiquette with your preschooler before embarking on a trick-or-treat adventure. Make sure your child knows to stick close to you when going from house to house, as well as to avoid strangers. Remind your child to dispose of any candy with wrappers that have already been open, and be sure to check any baked goods, fruit, or other wrapperless items before they eat them at home.

Finally, don’t forget to encourage your child to enjoy this special occasion. Take into account your child’s individual personality when planning events for the evening of Halloween, but don’t bury them under the stress of stranger danger or hazardous candy.
