Teaching Preschoolers About Independence Day

Independence Day

Fourth of July is right around the corner! This summer holiday is so fun to celebrate, and it is important to share with our preschoolers why we celebrate the Fourth! Here are some ideas for teaching your child about Independence Day.

1. The History

The best way for your child to learn about the Fourth is to talk with them about the history! July 4th is called Independence Day because that is the day the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. The Declaration of Independence said that America was free from England’s rule. The Fourth of July is when we celebrate our freedom!

2. Honor Our Troops

Independence Day is a great time to remember those who have given their lives to protect our freedom! You can send care packages to soldiers overseas or decorate the yard with flags to help say thanks. One of the easiest, and possibly our favorite, ways to thank the troops is writing them letters. Your child will love creating homemade thank-you cards! A quick Internet search will help you find addresses of where to send or drop off the cards.

3. American Flag Craft

Have your child make an American Flag using something they love! They can build the flag out of Legos or blocks. If they love to paint or draw, let them do that! Another fun idea is making American Flag Cookies. Cut sugar cookie dough into simple rectangles. After baking and cooling, have your child spread white icing over the cookies with a popsicle stick. Then, use red licorice to make the stripes and blue sprinkles in the top left corner!

These ideas will pair perfectly with all of your family’s Fourth of July plans! Helping them understand the history of Independence Day will deepen its significance for your whole family!
