Strategies for a Peaceful Sleep for Your Preschooler

Are you and your child frustrated by nap time? Nap time can be a challenging time for parents and preschoolers alike. But with the right strategies, your preschooler can easily transition into a peaceful sleep! Here are some nap time tips to help your preschooler get the rest they need.

Establish a consistent nap time routine

Your child’s body and mind recognize and respond to routine. You and your preschooler can try practicing the same routine each day before naps; this will help them recognize when it’s time for sleep! Parts of this routine can include changing into pajamas, brushing your child’s teeth, reading a story, singing a song, and getting tucked in. Try different methods to help them wind down, such as taking a warm bath or brushing their hair. Try different ways of soothing your child – rubbing their back, rocking them, wiping a warm washcloth over their face – and see to which they respond best.

Let them participate

Allow your preschooler to have a say in their nap time routine. Let them pick out their own pajamas or select a book to read before bed. This will help them take ownership of their own routine and get excited about nap time. Preschoolers love the feeling of independence, so even the smallest choice can empower your child and make it easier for the two of you to work together when it comes to nap time!

Limit food and drinks before bed

Some children become sleepy when they have a full tummy, but every child is different. For some preschoolers, eating and drinking close to nap time can make it harder for them to relax, especially if those foods and drinks contain sugar! Try limiting snacks and drinks in the hour before nap time to see if this has a positive effect on their sleep.

Nap time is an important part of your preschooler’s day! By following these tips, you can take steps to ensure that your child is getting the rest their developing brain needs during naps.
