How to Promote Independence in Your Preschooler

Independence plays a huge role in a developing preschooler’s life. Promoting independence in a child actually teaches them decision-making skills, responsibility, and confidence. As parents and caregivers, it is our responsibility to guide them in the best ways possible, and this includes teaching them to be independent. Here are three ways you can promote independence in your preschooler.

Ask your preschooler to do more

One way to help your child become more independent is to ask them to do more by giving your child more responsibility. This could be executed in a couple of ways:

  1. Give your preschooler small chores they can accomplish easily.
  2. Allow your child to take an active part in their daily routine. For instance, consider allowing them to pick out some of their outfits, help prepare food (or if you’re brave enough, allow them to help you in the cooking process), or let them wash and dry their clothes with your help.

Children love to help, and with your support, their eagerness to help can really grow their independence.

Resist the urge to help your preschooler do things they can do on their own

It can be incredily difficult sometimes to stand back and watch your child struggle to accomplish a task that can be easily done with your help. But if you desire independence for your child, you must resist the temptation to do this. When your child faces challenges, no doubt he will troubleshoot all the best ways he can overcome before asking for help.

don’t micromanage

Likewise, in addition to allowing your preschooler to finish a task independently, it’s important that parents not micromanage tasks as well. A huge part of independence is finding one’s own unique ways of doing things. Not every person resolves problems in the same way, and micromanaging a preschooler as they’re doing something hinders their ability to find their own way.

Above all else, praise your child any time they do something well. Notice that didn’t say “correctly.” Any time your child does something well, with a motivated effort of accomplishing something, praise them to ensure they continue trying and putting forth effort. Positive reinforcement will usually result in lifted spirits, which will always fuel a child on their path to independence.
