Ways to Practice Letters and Sounds with PreschoolersThough your preschooler will be learning about letters in preschool, there is still great benefit for a parent or loved one to practice letters and sounds with their preschooler at home. After all, practice makes greater progress. Here are four ways to practice letters and sounds with your preschooler at home:

Play guessing/drawing games with your preschooler

Have either a stack of home-made (cardstock) or store-bought letter cards available. Choose a couple letters at a time to practice with your preschooler. Let your child pick a letter card, and you draw something that starts with that letter sound. See if your child can guess what you are drawing.

Play acting games with your preschooler

Use the same letter cards and place a few face-up. Let your child throw a dice or marshmallow at any letter card. Then, you can act out something that makes the same sound as the letter. (Example: “J” for “Jump” or “T” for “Tiger” as you roar for fun) Your child can practice guessing. If your child struggles to guess, you can give the letter sound, and together you act out something. (“S” “Slither like a snake”).

Use sensory bins

Hide a few letter cards in a bin of dried rice, beans, noodles, etc. Let your preschooler “dig” for letter treasures. When your preschooler finds one, say the letter and the sound to your child. Practice however you best see fit.

Find good books together at the library or at a bookstore

Diane Alber has a good book called “A Little Spot Learns Letters.” The book teaches the basics of sounds in a fun and friendly format.

Whichever activity you choose, making it active or hands-on will help your preschooler learn without even knowing learning is taking place. Changing things up will bring about family fun and needed learning. Happy learning!
