Giving Thanks with your Preschooler

Giving Thanks with your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Hamilton Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

One of the biggest traditions at Thanksgiving is to say what you’re thankful for. Don’t exclude your preschool in this activity! The sooner you teach your child about thankfulness, the better!

Start Simple

Ask your preschooler what they are thankful for. What do they say? Use their answers as a springboard into your lesson on gratitude and the bigger picture. Are they thankful for toys? Tell them about other little girls and boys that might not have any toys at all and how important it is to share. Are they thankful for their house? Remind them how special it is to have their own room or their own bed. If they say, “I don’t know,” use it as an opportunity to point out all the great things they have. At the end of the day, you want to remind them of the things they might not realize are sacred to others, such as freedom, school, and more.

Expressing their Thanks

Once your child knows what they are thankful for, teach them how to express their appreciation. From simple things like saying “thank you” to others to being kind and always sharing what they have, your preschooler can show their gratitude every day. Talk to your child about treating their things nicely because of their thankfulness—being thankful means knowing the value in what they have and treating those things well.

Giving Back

Your little one may respond emotionally to their newfound gratitude, like by being sad for others who are less fortunate. Teach them that they can put their love for others into positive actions like donating time, toys, clothes, or canned goods to food pantries, homeless shelters, or other charitable organizations.

No matter what, everyone has something to be thankful for. Teaching your child about gratitude isn’t about counting how many possessions they have or comparing their lives to others. It’s about acknowledging how fortunate they are and expressing their gratitude to others. This, in turn, leads to sharing with others.
