Teaching Your Preschooler About Being Kind

Teaching Your Preschooler About Being Kind at Kids 'R' Kids Hamilton Mill, preschool, daycare, childcare

As a parent, one of the most important lessons you can teach your preschooler is how to be kind. When children reach the age where they are able to enroll in preschool, they must prepare to enter an environment filled with many new classmates and teachers. Instilling habits in your children that reflect thoughtfulness and consideration for others will help in their socialization and ability to make meaningful relationships in the future. Here are some simple but powerful things to do that will teach your child how to be kind in every interaction.

“Please” and “thank you”

While this may seem simple, implementing the use of “please” and “thank you” is a very important step for children in learning how to consider others before taking what they want. Merely prompting your child to say “please” before giving him something he wants, or asking him to say, “thank you” when he receives something will quickly instill this practice.

“Sorry”

Just like, “please” and “thank you,” enforcing proper apologies early is important for teaching children to not only think of others, but also be held accountable for their actions when it comes to how they treat their friends. Asking your child to apologize for something is also a great opportunity to then walk him through the scenario and help him understand the complexities of social situations.

Sharing

We all know the phrase: “sharing is caring,” and this is for a good reason. Children who are not told to share with their siblings, friends, or classmates can create selfish habits. Instill the habit of sharing at a young age in a familiar setting. At home, have your children take turns with items. Set a timer for one child to play with it, then when the timer rings, have the child pass it on to his sibling (or mom and dad if there are no siblings).

Remember to be patient whenever your child is reluctant to use certain manners. With love, encouragement, and consistency, and by setting a positive example, your preschooler will have wonderful manners in no time.
